The SD Association announces SDXC
The next generation SDXC (eXtended Capacity) memory card specification takes micro-storage to the next level with unprecedented storage capacity.
Not only will SDXC provide gargantuan storage capacity, but it will also provide high speed-data transfer speeds of 103MB per second, with a road map scheduling 300MB per second in the pipeline.
The new SDXC specification, developed by the SD Association retains the current SD interface.
“SDXC combines a higher capacity roadmap with faster transfer speeds as a means to exploit NAND flash memory technology as a compelling choice for portable memory storage and interoperability,” said Joseph Unsworth, research director, NAND Flash
Currently, the two primary uses for SD cards are mobile phones and digital cameras.
At its maximum capacity of 2TB, SDXC will store roughly 100HD movies, 480 hours of HD recording or 136 000 “fine-mode” pictures.
SDXC is the first memory card specification to provide 2TB storage without hindering the high-speed performance necessary for high-end photography. It is said to provide maximum speeds even when the SDXC specification achieves its 2TB storage capacity.
SDXC will use Microsoft’s exFAT file system, making it compatible with any PC running Windows.
The first manufacturer to support the announcement from the SD Association is Panasonic who are currently planning a 64GB SDXC, effectively doubling the current 32GB SDHC maximum.
Prices and availability have yet to be announced.
